All County Insurance - Brea, California - Great pictures! I was doing the same thing in Quito, Ecuador about a year ago. I was actually taking some pictures on my first day of about 10 dogs that were living at this outside laundry mat — moments later my camera was stolen by a man with a knife, so sadly i don’t have those pictures anymore.

As I headed south of Quito, I still had another camera and took many pictures of dogs and I too, got stares from the locals. It was interesting how a lot of dogs were on the roofs of buildings. One thing that really made the people of Ecuador look at me like I was crazy was when I fed a street dog some of my food from a restaurant, they almost looked mad, as if the dogs didn’t deserve it and the food was reserved for humans only. Very interesting how different cultures treat dogs.

February 11, 2011 - 3:42 pm

February 11, 2011 - 3:47 pm

February 11, 2011 - 6:40 pm

The Modern Nomad - The best thing about all of Chile’s strays (more than nearly any other country I’ve been to in South America) is that they’re all super friendly! Chileans don’t give them a lot of attention, and if you pat one on the head then you’ll soon have ten swarming around you asking for a scratch behind the ears or a scrap of meat!

Greetings from Punta Arenas! Our Plaza has a resident pack of about 65 dogs of all shapes and sizes :)

February 11, 2011 - 6:52 pm

LanaRenee - How do the dogs even survive down there in Punta Arenas.. how miserable cold.. poor guys!

And yes.. they are friendly.. my two pet dogs are ex street dogs.. though once you take them in they get territorial and are not so friendly any more.

February 11, 2011 - 6:56 pm

The Hook - Beautiful shots!

February 11, 2011 - 7:03 pm

Unfortunately, we have lots of stray dogs in Chile and most people don’t look at them the way you do. They’re really friendly and I wish I could take them home with me :(

February 11, 2011 - 11:17 pm

Happy.Bark.Days - Beautiful compositions! The 8th picture down from the top really emanates a dog’s life – eat, sleep, and be merry. I love taking pictures of my puppy, Miss Little Red Maple Leaf (who has her own blog…lol), but my photography skills aren’t quite as impressive. Keep up the good work.

I am Chilean, and yes, we do have a lot of dogs, both pets at home and stray dogs on the streets. Really few people take the time to see the magic the street dogs have, they’re quite witty and, if treated nicely, grateful and forever loyal.

whenquiet - On our way from Manduria to Nardo last summer, a bundle of “something” stumbled onto the highway. I told my husband, “You have to go back!” He zipped the car in reverse. I jumped out and whipped up a beautiful little bundle of black and white fur…a puppy(maybe four weeks old)…As I cuddled him(poor thing) and pleaded with my husband that we adopt him, we heard muted whimpers from the adjacent field. My husband and I gathered five more abandoned puppies. A car pulled over and out stepped two men. I was already in love with my black and white that I named Sojo(after Sojourner Truth, the female African American abolitionist) because he ventured out past fear. Sojo realized that he had to step out on faith in order to save his life and the life of his family.
The men took the other puppies and I pleaded until my husband gave in. We purchased a portable dog house, food, medicine and returned to our bed and breakfast. One of the bed and breakfast owners happened to be a vet and gave us parasite medicine. The other owner, however, was not too thrilled about a puppy being on the property. Sojo whimpered and cried all night, every night. The vet suggested we turn him over to a a dog shelter where he would probably be reunited with his brothers and sisters. Unhappily, I had to accept that I would have to let this dog go.
Until this day, I think about Sojo and his courage.
Thank you for your post. Your photos are beautiful!!

natiaranguiz - in chile you can find a multitud of dogs living in streets. the sad news is the sobrepoblation poblation in cities.
we should adopt those dogs but the normal chilean culture about pets is that we “want” have dogs races more that the “others”.
the “solution” of the government, the church (catholic) and some people is kill the dogs.

As a person that lives in Cambodia surprisingly there are a lot of dogs still roaming around the street (this region is notorious for … well, using dogs for different purposes. i.e. food). They’re all so adorable and I wish I had as great skills as you to capture them so well. I want the little black one and the one in the first photo! Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

Patricia Gomez - Lana, I´m chilean and I love dogs, well, I love any animals, but the thing that most take my atention is the look of them. In most of your picture you can see it. I hope the sensibility grow up and people learn to see more than a nice and sweet face. It is so important to show that the need care, a simple, “caricia”, i dont know that word in english. Any way, congratulation for your work. :)

February 13, 2011 - 11:53 am

Lisa - Hey Heidi,
Thanks for sending me this link. Yes, there are plenty of strays here as in Albania, as you say, but there is one thing going for them here and that’s that….up til’ now…I haven’t seen anybody be cruel to them as we saw so often there. And it’s true what another poster said about them being very sweet and friendly. They’ll actually trot alongside you as if you’re walking them. It’s cute. Byt it would be so much better if they had a loving home they could depend on for food, care and medical attention, if needed.

Alexis Jenny - Are these just stray dogs there? They are so adorable! I would end up taking them all home with me.

February 13, 2011 - 10:33 pm

LanaRenee - I didn’t set up anything.. all of them were just as they were. Most were strays but some where outside of their house.

February 13, 2011 - 10:34 pm

LanaRenee - Yep, most were just strays, some were outside of houses that probably feed them, but they didn’t have collars or anything.

thorsaurus - Since they are dogs and it’s Chile, does that make them “Chili Dogs”? Great pics. I really like the husky and the little black puppy. All very cute.

Daniela - That is what I call a lovely “QUILTRO ” collection! (Chilean slang for dogs with no pedigree…) Quiltros are a real institution in Chile, my family adopted one, Valentino, and he is the king of the house. Keeping him was the best thing we could have done!

colin L Beadon - Lana All the dogs you have chosen, seem very well fed and looked after. You should come and photograph some of the starving strays in Barbados.
You have a great site. Latin America is full of surprises so much unseen. I loved the Andes in Venezuela and the children selling primroses, small crisp carrots, and peaches up in the high highways with their deep valleys and trout streams.

The Modern Nomad - Most of the street dogs here have a lot of husky blood in them…they’ve got fur like bears. There’s this one blackish grey one that is about the same size. He’s a hunk; I feed him the ends of my completos…you know, that dry bit of bun that tastes like cardboard.

Ah, the trick is to adopt only one! haha! If you get a second you should get a puppy, which also isn’t hard in Chile…just check behind all the dumpsters or in the bushes and you’ll find a nursing mother eventually! haha!

Travel Plans: Puerto Montt, Hawaii, Los Angeles, San Diego

Is there a way I can say this without sounding like I’m bragging? I get 90% discount on flights starting…. TODAY! So Pablo and I are flying to Puerto Montt, Chile tomorrow and spending the weekend there with some of his friends that, unfortunately, had to drive there. We also had plans to make it to Easter Island next weekend for their annual cultural festival, but the flights are full and there is pretty much no way 5 people are not going to show up so we can get on standby. That means I’ll leave for Hawaii to visit my parents and brother a bit earlier than planned and arrive there next weekend to spend two weeks there. I’ll be in the U.S. for the Super Bowl! Pablo was dying to go to Hawaii to watch the Super Bowl with my dad, but it just wasn’t worth all the vacation days to travel so far for such little time. Mexico and the Dominican Republic are on our list to vacation together since the flights are direct with LAN. On my way back, I’ll stop over in LA, get a ride to San Diego, spend a weekend there, then take the train back up to LA for a night and then head back to Santiago.

I’m thinking this blog might turn into a travel blog for a bit. And I promise to take lots of photos, artistic ones, not just point & shoot, but with my SLR, since one of my goals this year was to take more photos of my “daily life” and I haven’t really stuck to it yet.

Happy Summer! (in the Southern Hemisphere)

Patty - You mean Pablo doesn’t want to travel 21 hours to see the superbowl and snorkel, then get back on a plane? He would only need to take one day vacation. lol

Sara Beck - Have fun.

It’s probably okay to brag about something like that.

Elephant Safari Family Packages - The blog looks quite interesting. It is quite good to have been to Los Angles, Hawaii and San Diego for a travel trip. The cities have too many distinct spots to be visited. One of friends browsed Asian Elephant Safari (, which is exciting and ultimate wilderness safari in Thailand, which will take you through the Thai forest along the Karen Hill Tribe people and is carried on the back of elephants. They had accommodations in Karen Hill Tribe Lodge and Musikee Eco Lodge for the visitors and the food served is too fabulous.

Fruit in Chile

I might have said this before, but one of my favorite things about living in Chile is the cheap and delicious fruits and veggies. In the U.S. I never really noticed a fruit and and season relationship except for cherries mean Summer, other than that, I never really thought about it. Here in Chile its totally season based since we get it at a farmers market. We also have our own apricot tree, so that season lasted about 2 weeks while we stuffed our faces with fresh apricots, apricot ice cream, apricot crisp, and anything else we could conjure up. I remember talking about how I loved cheap oranges and made orange juice every day but lately there have been no oranges in our kitchen and two places I have asked for natural orange juice didn’t have it. Orange season over! Adios oranges, hello melons. I have been eating melon everyday for the last 2 weeks. Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. They are so ripe and juicy. I just cut up this cantaloupe and probably ended up eating a fourth of it in the process.

Juls - Oooh yes! South America and fruit- boy how I miss those tastes, flavors, aromas, juiciness and textures in the miserable UK where lots of fruit and much of the food stuff remind me of cardboard. In Valdivia the 3 of us bought a kilo of strawberries and a kilo of cherries, with intention of eating it after washing when we get back to our hostel (I always wash the fruit before I eat it). But there was nothing to wash, as we gulped the aromatic lot down on our way. They must have been just picked, so wonderfully fresh. And chirimoyas! No, no, don’t get me started…
