I saw this idea on one of my favorite blogs “Fabulously Broke in the City” at this post.
I made this map so hopefully, in the next year or so, I can watch it grow. I’ve been to a bunch of places, and I’m so grateful for that. But, I can’t wait to see more of South America with Pablo once we start flying on the cheap. Argentina and Chile don’t exactly fit the Latino country stereotype. Most people I’ve met say that Chile and Argentina are really lacking the Latino “hospitality”, which I agree with given my experience in Mexico and Central America (having experienced the warmest hospitality in Mexico). Chile is not very exotic.. its actually a lot like California, landscapely speaking. And, it’s safe.. which, sadly, also doesn’t fit the S. America stereotype. Pablo was trying to convince me that Chile is a third world country, I assured him that any country with 29 Starbucks in the capital city is not a third world country. Somehow, “third world” became a term of development, but it really only had to do with how the country aligned or didn’t align during the Cold War.. but we’ll not get into that. (Chile was a third world country)
My point is.. I’d really like to see the rest of the countries around here.. maybe feel a little unsafe, get a sunburn, and maybe even be hassled to buy stupid souvenirs in the streets. Now that’s what I call traveling.
Arggg… As I’m typing this.. I remembered how much of this country I want to see too.
I give up. I wanna go everywhere.
What would be your first choice S. America destination?

Brenda - Rachel and Dan and the babies are headed to Peru next Wednesday for a couple of weeks…you can quiz her later on likes/dislikes, dos/don’ts, etc from their experience.
Patty - Ecuador and Peru A little on the edge, has the warmer weather, jungles, beaches and critters. More Cultural difference. Guess I will see you next year in Ecuador!
Abby - I’m so jealous that you get to travel for cheap!! You’re going to be able to see so many cool places.
It bothers me so much when people talk about Chile being a third world country. Yes, there is poverty. Yes, there is inequality. But it is fully in the category of “developing country” or “emerging economy” and in fact joined the OECD last year, which is an international organization mainly for developed countries. I think what happens (or at least I’ve noticed this in my experience) is that upper and middle class Chileans are embarrassed of the poverty and inequality and want to have some sort of “excuse” as to why it exists, so saying Chile is a third world country does that. It’s like, oh yeah, there are poor people, but it’s because we’re a third world country.
Also, if you want a sunburn, just walk around Santiago without sunscreen on for a day during the summer. The hole in the ozone layer will help you out
hahaha. Although I suppose it would be more fun to get one lying on a beach in Brasil….
Lisa - How could one ever decide?! Macchu Picchu is tempting, that’s for sure….but I would also love to go somewhere a bit less known and make my own adventures, if you know what I mean. I have also always had a soft spot for Uruguay…
Lisa - Machu*!
Sara - If I had more money and time…(don’t we all wish that?) I would head back to BsAs for like a month. Then probably Panama and Costa Rica.
Brittany - such a great idea! i would love to check off a few more places…
