The Chilean work day: 12 hours?

This is my first “comment on Chilean culture”, but I’m not yet at the stage that all gringas supposedly go though, the “why the hell am I here?/”I hate Chile” stage. I’m having a good time and have met some gringas that are in the same situation as me, more or less, so I’m not completely out of place or alone as this gringa was when she arrived here 6 years ago.
I intern at the Spanish school I have classes at. By “intern” I mean wait around until 6pm for little random task assignments that I usually complete within 10 minutes. I’m beginning to think that Chileans do not have any time management skills, or at least not a culture that values using them. When Pablo got his job, his “official” workday was until 5:30, but then he said “but nobody leaves till 6:30″. I asked why he couldn’t leave on time and he said he would probably get fired if he didn’t appear to be working as hard as his coworkers, but the thing is, STAYING LONGER DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE GETTING MORE DONE!
Another gringa I met here in Santiago works mainly with Chileans in a professional setting and she confirmed my “sterotype” of the Chilean work day: people show up about 10-15 minutes later than they are supposed to, then spend a long morning break over coffee and chatting, then go to lunch for probably more than the hour they are allowed and, finally, stay late as if to make up for lost time. How productive! I guess this method is fine for those who don’t have someone or something better to go home to, but it ruins it for those who do. It’s really not the workload that is keeping my boyfriend in the office till sometimes 8 (which means he doesn’t get home until 8:30), it’s the culture and since he’s new, he’s been having to depend on some workaholics for training and tasks. In my head I’m thinking how nice it would be to get all my tasks given to me when I start work at 2 and finish them in a hour (which is about how long I end up actually working during my 4 hour shift) and leave early and enjoy the afternoon. Instead, I might browse around the internet for an hour or so before getting any task assigned to me, and then finish in 15 minutes or so, and wait around for another hour before anyone asks anything more of me.
So as of now, I am in the process of adjusting to the long work day which, more importantly, means adjusting to the late dinners, late everything else, and shortened sleep time (only 6 hours of sleep per night):(

Karl Keefer - The time usage is not just a chileno thing! People waste time a lot of the day in America, too!
